I can’t believe the end though. I like died when I realized it was the last one.

Tweet Reviews Like this spring’s Amityville Horror, The Fog is a pale remake of a year-old horror film that wasn’t all that memorable to begin with. The original was directed in by John Carpenter, fresh from the enormous success of Halloween. Rather than churn out another slasher picture, Carpenter attempted an old-fashioned ghost story where the scares come courtesy of mood and atmosphere rather than gore. Ironically, thanks to movies like Halloween, audiences had come to prefer blood ‘n’ guts, and the director had to undertake eleventh-hour reshoots to add that sort of material to The Fog.

It’s no wonder, then, that the finished product feels schizophrenic. Dean Cundey’s elegant cinematography and the low-key narrative sit uneasily alongside routine gotcha moments a dead body springing to life and too many shots of the lumbering, knife-wielding boogeymen who hide inside the fog. You’d think that the people behind the remake would have learned from Carpenter’s mistakes in fact, the director and his late co-writer Debra Hill are producers on the new version but the new Fog commits many of the same sins and adds to them a poorly developed script, bland casting and generic direction.

The set-up remains virtually unchanged from the original. Once again we find ourselves in Antonio Bay, a small town off the coast of Northern California that seems to be populated entirely by descendents of the four founding fathers. The residents are gearing up to celebrate the town’s centennial, never suspecting that Antonio Bay was built on a dark secret. One hundred years ago, the founders agreed to sell part of their land to a colony of lepers.

But on the night the lepers were due to arrive, the four men intercepted their ship, robbed them at knifepoint and set the vessel on fire. Now the ghosts of those poor people have come back for revenge.

John Carpenter’s originals are better than their remakes PERIOD

I’ll share that excerpt in a moment, but first a bit of background. I wrote about the great British actor and author Dirk Bogarde in a three-part Wild Reed series in I was in Australia at the time, and reading John Coldstream’s hefty biography of Bogarde. It’s a very illuminating and entertaining book, and one that I definitely recommend – along with a more recent publication, Dirk Bogarde: Rank Outsider by Sheridan Morley. Here’s what Morley says about Bogarde’s perspective on his own sexuality – a stance that intrigues me and, truth be told, saddens me.
